Wallows performed two sold-out shows at History in Toronto on Saturday, June 25th and Sunday, June 26th. The group gave it their all both nights, but Sunday was bigger and better with higher energy, a unique setlist, and even higher temperatures.
To start the show, Wallows’ opener, spill tab, delivered indie-pop perfection, lighting up the crowd with her charm and undeniable talent. The French Korean-American artist sang many songs from her discography and even delivered an acoustic version of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone.”
Wallows took to the stage soon after that, beginning with “Hard To Believe” off of their new album, “Tell Me That It’s Over.” The band kept the crowd’s excitement with performances of “Remember When,” “Marvelous,” and “Treacherous Doctor.” Wallows showed their multitude of talents throughout the show, even switching around with drummer Cole Preston as lead vocalist for the song “Quarterback.”
As the night went on, Wallows couldn’t help but mention the big event that took place earlier that day, pride! The band wished everyone a happy pride. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Dylan Minnette expressed how he tried to wear the most colourful piece of clothing he owned to show his support. The band members then sang “1980s Horror Film II,” a song known for its iconic line: “I’m really not that into guys.” The lead vocalist of this song, Braeden Lemasters, danced around the stage wearing colourful accessories and even held up a fan’s pride flag throughout the song. The flag was left sitting by Cole’s drumset after the song ended and could be seen for the rest of the show.
It wasn’t long till it was almost the end of the night. But, this night’s encore was unlike typical Wallows encores. The band took an unusual request from a fan for the first song, playing “Sun Tan.” For the second song, Wallows brought out comedian Kurtis Conner who has joked about being a band member of Wallows in the past. The venue filled with screams of excitement, watching Kurtis’ best attempt at singing Clairo’s verse in “Are You Bored Yet.”
The band finished with “I’m Full,” along with goodbyes and handing out different goodies to fans. The “Tell Me That It’s Over” tour is a fantastic time filled with hard-hitting indie rock, energetic crowds, and plenty of surprises.
