This September, a new album from Dr. John will be released via Rounder Records titled Things Happen That Way. The project features the music that the Jazz legend was working on at the time of his death in June 2019. Karla R. Pratt, the daughter of the musician born Mac Rebennack, worked as an executive producer on the project, as Rolling Stone reports.
The album is set to feature covers of classic country songs, new music, and a re-worked version of Dr. John’s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters” with Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real. The album is co-produced by guitarist Shane Thierot who was with Dr. John during the recording of it in New Orleans in 2018. Things Happen That Way also features appearances from Willie Nelson and Aaron Neville on tracks.
The last album from Jazz legend Dr. John was released in 2014, and it was the Louis Armstrong tribute Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch. News of the album comes after Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach—who produced Dr. John’s 2012 album Locked Down—announced that he was working on a documentary about Dr. John with two of his former managers.
Things Happen That Way is a window into the final music making moments of the New Orleans legends storied career and a chance to spend ten tracks with Jazz royalty. Look forward to its release which is slated for September 23rd of 2022. Check out the full tracklist below.
