Followers of Road Trip Playlists will know that we are big fans of Mt. Joy, and especially their live performances. So we were very excited to attend the first night of their 2-night stint at Pier 17. Back in June, they performed at Bowery Ballroom to a sold-out crowd the entirety of their newest album, Orange Blood, on the day of its release. Ticket prices on the resale market were far too steep for many fans to be able to attend and the band itself advised against people letting the scalpers win, saying they’d be back in September. For the fans that were unable to attend that concert then later made it to Pier 17, Mt. Joy delivered.
It’s always great seeing a band that really jams when on stage and gives the fans more to rock out to than what typically makes it on an album. Many of the songs turned into long solos and jams, notably Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper on the guitar. Shows like that really remind you of how talented these musicians are as both songwriters and performers.
Not to be missed was Jackie Miclau on the keys. She had many moments to shine, earning cheers from the audience, but the biggest standout is the intro to their song Strangers which caused an uproar in the crowd.
Near the end of the concert, Matt Quinn announced they had a good friend to bring out. That friend was none other than Noah Kahan, friend of the Road Trip Playlists podcast who is gaining a lot of popularity due to his viral song Stick Season. He helped them sing Silver Linings.
Mt. Joy never disappoints and if you get a chance to catch them while they are touring for Blood Orange, I would highly suggest it.
