Joe P Wows Crowd at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere – Review

Due to some subway issues there was a delay in our arrival to cover joe p opening for Joywave on Wednesday night. However, upon entering the Brooklyn music venue Elsewhere mid-set brought a different perspective. The room was alive and the energy was noticeable immediately walking into the packed music hall. A four-piece band was playing on stage with joe p appropriately at the front as the notes of ‘Fighting in the Car’ carried throughout the venue. It was one of those opening acts that you wish to soak up every minute of.

It was that song, Fighting in the Car that first got joe p noticed by Zane Lowe on TikTok. Lowe duetted the clip and Joe later signed to Neon Gold/Atlantic Records and released his debut EP ‘Emily Can’t Sing’ on October 22, 2021. Hearing it live it was easy to feel the contagious magic that saw it catch a wave on the viral social media platform.

joe p who has been in a band since the eighth grade began his solo project in the pandemic. During lockdown he wrote what went on to become “Emily Can’t Sing” the artist posted ideas as they came onto TikTok which quickly skyrocketed to millions of views and over 300 thousand followers in a matter of months.

The night went on with the band playing ‘Color TV’ to which the singer led the crowd in a sing-along of the last chords of the song repeating “I’m upstairs in your room, You’re downstairs dancing.” A special and intimate feel overtook the room as each sang together.

As a live act joe p had a stage presence and charisma that carried across the venue. The music that was born during the uncertainty of the pandemic has catapulted the artist into an alternative artist to look out for. Watch for joe p to be a rising star in the genre and a household name.

The set gathered momentum all the way until the final note. Prior to his last song, joe p said to the crowd “Last song, then I promise that I’ll leave.” The crowd responded with boos throughout the venue, clearly not wanting the opening set to end. joe p and the band closed with the hit ‘Off my Mind’ and rotated from a up tempo rock song to the intimate acapella notes from the lead singer and back to the electric sounds of the band. Thank you’s echoed as the band left the stage and the crowed cheered with thank you’s of their own.
