Dean Lewis Plays Intimate NYC Show Prior To European Tour

Dean Lewis is back taking the stage for the first time since the pandemic began. The Australian singer-songwriter is set to do a solo tour across Europe beginning November 15th. To kick off the tour and also likely to brush of some of the live show cobwebs, Dean Lewis performed a sold out show at New York City’s, Mercury Lounge.

Fans filed in from the rainy streets to a fill a packed to the exit ballroom. For many in the crowd this wasn’t their first Dean Lewis live show. However, this was the first time to see him in New York without the backing of his live band. The solo set created an intimate and beautiful night.

Lewis’ vocals soared in the small ballroom backing the acoustic guitar or keyboard in which he rotated between equally. Seeing him in the small setting of Mercury Lounge felt like a treat for the fans lucky to have a ticket. The size of the venue wasn’t the only factor contributing to the sense of intimacy. Between each song the crowd was met with conversation and banter from the 3x ARIA award winning artist.

While there was some obvious rust from over two years not performing live, it wasn’t evident in his vocals or playing. Every aspect of the live performance was incredible. The rust showed only when the artist had trouble remembering lyrics on one of his songs. However, when Lewis showed the slightest hesitation in the song during ‘Half A Man’ the crowd was there to fill the void. Forgetting the first line of one of his most popular songs wasn’t the only issue of the song. The sound was unplugged mid-song by accident, and again the crowd joined for an unplugged chorus with Lewis.

Once again, the crowd was not only treated to a strong performance artistically. The interaction and storytelling between songs were an extra fun touch. Prior to ‘Half A Man’ the songwriter exclaimed that one of his only great regrets was that the song was not released as a single.

Lewis also took the opportunity to introduce new songs that he had written. For the first time ever he played his one week old single ‘Looks Like Me’ live. While the song is brand new, it was already loved and sung by fans in attendance. A moment that visibly and audibly appreciated by calling it “honestly amazing.”

Following that was the performance of ‘Be Alright’ a song Lewis noted he usually closes with. However, after forgoing the motions of an encore and telling the crowd he “Thank you for tonight. Thank you for not forgetting me.” and that he would be staying on stage to play a new song to close the set.

The new song, was another unreleased single. He wrote it as early as three weeks ago, and expressed his excitement of writing this song. He called the song a possible sequel to that of ‘Be Alright’ and the continuation of it. Titled ‘Hurt Less’ the song is packed with vulnerable lyrics and an honest review of a past relationship. It was special to be the first crowd to hear it and the song is sure to be a hit.
