I’ve waited years to be able to see Australian band, Sons of the East live since falling in love with their 2013 ‘Sons of the East’ EP. As I walked into Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right music venue, I learned that I wasn’t the only one. The band sold out their first show in New York City and I could hear other audience members discussing how many years they have wanted to see this band live. Since the 2013 EP that helped me discover the Australian music makers, the group has amassed over 170 million streams, and sold out tours throughout Europe and Australia. Now, on a Thursday night in Williamsburg, we were getting our wish to see them for ourselves and they did not disappoint.
Fresh off of the release of their new ‘Palomar Parade’ album, the Sons of the East blessed the Baby’s All Right crowd with songs from the new album as well as known hits like ‘California.’ The bands performance was electric and they owned the intimate room of Baby’s All Right. I’ve always known that the Sons of the East are an insane live act, but they exceeded my already high expectations.
Lead singer Jack Rollins had an incredible presence on stage. He shined vocally playing songs like ‘My Repair,’ carrying over the entire room backed with loud impressive guitar riffs. But he also brought a unique sound with his playing of harmonica. Rollins would have glowing runs on the harmonica, whilst playing acoustic guitar and inserting the bands strong lyrics as well.
The sold out crowd ate up every part of the sons performance. Singing and swaying to every verse. Even the new songs were known and sung by the fans in the crowd. The crowd was so fun, that Rollins joined us as the band played ‘You Might Think,’ from their newest album. The show felt like a night amongst friends with the love that was there. The love was bouncing back and forth between the raucous crowd and the gracious band.
